She's got the body of a goddess and an angel's shining face
But no matter where she goes, she's always out of place
Looking for acceptance and trying not to leave a trace
Of all the places she's been and all the ways she's failed
'Cause what's the point in anyone knowing her when she's only going to bail
At the first sign of trouble, the first siren wail
She dares anyone to try and catch her before her ship sets sail

And all she's ever wanted is a way to fight the dark
A hand to reach out, someone to ignite the spark
That flared up inside her the day she saw a dying dove
And realized that somewhere there's a god who allows the end of love

But all we can do is try, and hope that we succeed
To set someone else on fire, make them feel the burning need
To connect with someone else, with someone else until we feed
Enough light into this world that flourishes when we bleed
And you could be the one to plant that first new seed
That would grow into a light to put an end to all this night
Carry it around, shine it from such great heights
That it would become the sun, and when the birds take flight
They'll sing the song of forever and when a feather falls to the ground
A lost little boy will catch it and he'll know that he is found

Today, there are children out there on the busy streets
Stealing food they could never afford to eat, wishing for the days when their mothers used to rock them to sleep
And you're sitting there stressing and obsessing over the rhythmic sound of his heartbeat
Because maybe he isn't really what you thought, and there is no black and white
You can't say it's all his fault every time you fight
But at least you have a warm bed, and a pillow for your head when you lie down at night
There's nothing more beautiful than children kneeling in worship before the altar of their lives
And nothing uglier than those same children learning to fight with guns, with fists, with knives
So you close your eyes and count: one, two, three, four, five, and pray that when you wake up tomorrow
You won't have to hear another news story about a fatal drive-by

Sitting and sighing won't do a thing
For all the lost lives, all the songs that will never have a chance to sing
All the hands that will never be adorned with class rings, wedding rings, all the statues erected in memory of
A child who streched toward love, like the sun, until he grew angel wings
And flew from this world that hasn't even begun to comprehend the meaning of forever
But every breath drawn is a chance to make something better
So breathe, breathe like pain is smoke and you can inhale it, exhale it
Into love for the lungs that have been starved for so long
Listen to the songs of the caged bird freed, this is no joke, this is forever and you're not going to fail it
Don't be the hand that's waving goodbye, we might not save the world, but somebody please tell me we're at least going to try

Thanks, you guys. Seriously. I appreciate the comments and stuff. And especially Minh ... I don't think I've ever given anyone goosebumps before. :D

And exactly, Hanif, that's basically the idea behind it all.

Let's see.
When I read this I think of all those people who are living in the dark waiting for “someone to ignite the spark,” but at the same time it is these same people who probably help more than anybody else. You can find heroes of today among all groups and in any place on this world, it doesn’t matter if you look in the alley ways or under freeway overpasses. They can be poor, rich, foreigners, ex-cons, etc. This also reminds me of hospital waiting rooms where whole families break down and cry at the news of a loved one’s death. Yep, at times when I read those penetrating newspaper stories the impact causes me to imagine the world full of phantoms flying from one person in need to another helping them, that’s just the impression I get when I read tragic stories because it seems totally impossible that a human will be there in time of need. Thanks for posting this, though, you give some pessimistic people like myself on here hope with your words that the world will probably learn to live in peace. Perhaps a new and powerful desire to see an end to madness and unfairness will rise up within humans and will be what brings the “burning need to connect.” Let’s just hope it doesn’t take more pointless wars and tragedies to inspire us to do this.
Great poem.

Thank you, Kevin. I'm glad you enjoy it. And Rask, I'm naturally pessimistic myself and don't have a very happy outlook on the future of the world, but I wrote this in a rare burst of optimism and I do think that we, meaning people in general, could make a significant difference if we could be bothered to really make the effort. Let's just hope indeed.

Wow, wow ... good job! It gave me goosebumps!
I love that there's a poem that says there can be hope out there, yu know, because there are so many poems and things that are so depressing. (Wow. I said 'there' four times in the same sentence ... *shudder* I really love this one!
